People Counting & Footfall Analytics

Retailers know their sales figure precisely and their visitor figure not at all.
Conversion rate needs both.

A visitor management system records who enters a building, when they arrived and left, and who they came to see. People counting adds the other half — how many came in total, when, and where they went. Together they turn an entrance into a source of data rather than a door.

✓ Who came in, identified and consented✓ How many came in, anonymous and aggregate✓ Conversion rate against transactions✓ Verified against a manual count

Two halves

Two questions, one entrance

Who came in

Visitor management

Self-service check-in, host notification, badge printing, visitor log, and a record that satisfies building security and safety obligations.

  • › Individual, identified and consented
  • › Check-in at a kiosk or from a pre-registered link
  • › The host notified as the visitor arrives
  • › A log that answers who was in the building during an evacuation
Facility management →
How many came in

People counting

Camera-based counting of everyone entering and leaving, by direction, hour and zone.

  • › Anonymous, aggregate, no identification
  • › By direction of travel and by zone
  • › Most buildings need both and buy them separately
  • › From different vendors, at different times
  • › Running them on the same infrastructure is cheaper and more complete
How counting works →

Method

How people counting works

Overhead or entrance-mounted cameras

Vision software counts individuals crossing a line, distinguishing direction of travel and filtering out repeat passes and staff movement.

Occupancy and footfall by hour and zone

Zone counting extends it inside the space — which areas draw people, how long they stay, which displays get passed without a stop.

The count, not the footage

Well-implemented systems retain the count rather than identifiable footage, which places them in a different privacy category from face recognition.

Retail

What retailers do with footfall data

Conversion rate

Transactions divided by visitors. Without a visitor count, a fall in sales is indistinguishable from a fall in traffic — and the two need entirely different responses.

Staffing against demand

Footfall by hour against the staff rota. Most stores are overstaffed at open and understaffed at the peak, and nobody notices because the rota was set before anyone measured.

Marketing measurement

Whether a campaign brought people in, separately from whether they bought. Two different failures with two different fixes.

Window and display testing

Passing traffic against entering traffic tells you whether the window works.

Beyond retail

Buildings, branches and mixed use

01Building operators use occupancy

For space planning, cleaning schedules, HVAC zoning and tenant reporting — all of which currently run on assumption.

02Branches correlate footfall with waiting time

Which is where this pairs with a queue management system. Knowing that Tuesday 11am brings forty visitors and an eighteen-minute wait is a staffing decision; knowing one half of that is not.

03Malls report footfall to tenants

As a leasing metric, and increasingly need it by zone rather than only at the main entrances.

Accuracy

Accuracy, honestly

Stated honestly

Within a few percent, when installed well

Accuracy drops at wide entrances where several people pass abreast, in heavy crowding, and where cameras are mounted at an angle rather than overhead. Groups walking closely together are the common failure mode.

  • › Well-installed overhead counting is typically accurate within a few percent
  • › Wide entrances and heavy crowding degrade it
  • › Angled mounting degrades it further
  • › Verify against a manual count during commissioning
  • › A one-hour manual count at a busy period settles it

Staff distortion

Separating staff from visitors

In a branch with eight staff and two hundred daily visitors, employee movement in and out can distort the count by a material percentage and skew every conversion figure calculated from it.

  • › Staff carrying a recognised tag
  • › Counting only during defined periods
  • › Or excluding movements through staff-only entrances
  • › This matters more in small locations than large ones

Any vendor unwilling to verify against a manual count is telling you something. Deployment runs two to four weeks per site, and most of the effort is positioning and validation. Existing CCTV can sometimes be reused, though most is mounted at an oblique angle for identification rather than overhead for counting — a site survey settles which cameras qualify.

Privacy

Privacy

Counting derives a number

Generally without retaining identifiable footage or matching individuals. That is a genuinely different privacy position from face recognition.

Say so in the building notice

Rather than leaving visitors to assume the worst, which is what they will do in the absence of a stated position.

Visitor management is different

It collects identified personal data by design. Retention period, access control and purpose need documenting, and the visitor should be told at check-in.

People counting FAQs

What buyers ask us about footfall analytics

What is a visitor management system?

A visitor management system records who enters a building, when they arrived and left, and who they came to see. Modern systems combine self-service check-in, host notification and badge printing with camera-based counting, so both individual visitor records and overall footfall are captured.

What is people counting and how does it work?

People counting uses overhead or entrance-mounted cameras with vision software to count individuals entering and leaving a space, distinguishing direction of travel and filtering out staff or repeat passes. The output is occupancy and footfall data broken down by hour, entrance and zone.

What is footfall analytics used for?

Retailers use it to measure conversion rate — visitors against transactions — and to plan staffing against actual traffic patterns. Branches and service centres use it to correlate footfall with waiting times. Malls and building operators use it for occupancy management and tenant reporting.

How accurate is camera-based people counting?

Well-installed overhead counting is typically accurate within a few percent, though accuracy drops at wide entrances, in heavy crowding, or where cameras are angled rather than overhead. Accuracy should be verified against a manual count during commissioning rather than assumed from the specification.

Can it distinguish staff from visitors?

Yes, by several methods: staff carrying a recognised tag, counting only during defined periods, or excluding movements through staff-only entrances. Removing staff from counts matters, because in a small branch employee movement can distort the footfall figure substantially and skew conversion reporting.

Does it work with existing cameras?

Sometimes. Counting needs an overhead or near-overhead view at adequate resolution, and most CCTV is mounted at an oblique angle for identification instead. A site survey determines which existing cameras can be reused and where new ones need to be installed.

What about privacy in people counting?

Counting systems generally process images to derive a count without retaining identifiable footage or matching individuals, which puts them in a different category from face recognition. Confirm what your deployment retains and for how long, then state it in your building privacy notice.

How is people counting deployed?

Cameras are positioned at each entrance and zone boundary, calibrated against a manual count, then connected to a dashboard reporting footfall by hour, day and location. Two to four weeks per site is typical, with most of the effort in positioning and validation.
